Google Webmaster Tools: A Brief Overview

As it turns out, the reason lots of people – most, in fact – who haven’t yet joined their WordPress sites to Google’s Webmaster Tools fail to do so out of ignorance. After all, what businessperson would hobble themselves on purpose? With that in mind, before you learn how to get things all set up, you need to understand why you’re doing it for the first time. Don’t worry, it’s not complicated.
WordPress, as you almost certainly know if you’re reading this, is a combination blogging platform and content management service (CMS). Having spawned many children and imitators, it’s probably the most popular method of website creation that doesn’t involve hand-coding them yourself (or hiring someone to do it for you). Sites hosted on/through WordPress are commonly referred to as “WordPress sites”, so that’s what we’ll call them in this tutorial.
Google’s Webmaster Tools, on the other hand, is like a diagnostics kit toolbox. It gives you a real-time, under the hood style view of what’s going on with your websites. Wanna know how Yahoo, Bing, and (obviously!) Google view your website? Better yet, would you like to know how your visitors actually found you, right down to the search strings they used? It’s all here, and that’s just the beginning. This suite of tools and technologies will alert you to problems with your website, allow you to make it more optimized for both web crawler and organic traffic, and more – and it’s one hundred percent free. Bluntly put, integrating your WordPress site(s) with Google’s Webmaster Tools is a no-brainer, so let’s get down to the nitty-gritty of how it’s done.

What is Google Webmaster Tools

Google’s Webmaster tools is a set of tools offered by Google to give publishers a look at how their website is seen by the search engine. It provides reports and data that can help you understand how different pages on your website are appearing in search results. It shows you the search queries where a page from your website appears in the results and how often it is clicked. This data can help you improve your older articles, write new content, and formulate a content strategy for your website. Google webmaster tools also allow you to submit XML sitemap of your website, exclude URLs, and help Google display the most important content of your website. It also notifies you if there is a problem with your site which is stopping Google from crawling and indexing your pages.
